In my otherwise quiet Portland, OR neighborhood, silence, peace, and clean air are all under assault from a constant barrage of freight trains. It might be happening in your neighborhood too! They park up to 24 hours at a time — engines idling, spewing pollution near hundreds of families and a grade school. This site monitors sound 24/7 and logs horn blasts and idling (stopped) locomotives to keep record and show you the alarming situation.

One of the features of what I do here is monitor for all horns, trains, idle trains, and other things, trains specifically, do to fuck up this otherwise nice neighborhood.
Good news: the plan is to bring all the noise, all the disruption, all the 3am horns, to the neighborhoods where UP execs live. Surely, as train advocates, for big American Business, this is a small price to pay and an improvement to their neighborhoods as ways to monitor -- in real-time -- their massive train success.
